One of the recurring obstacles in fulfilling the mission of divine prophets is the resistance of people manifested as taʿdhīr (excuse-making) in response to their call. This phenomenon, highlighted in the Qur'an through various forms such as excuse-making, procrastination, mockery, and denial, signifies not merely individual or doctrinal opposition but, on a broader scale, acts as a structural barrier to the realization of social reform and the institutionalization of transformation. The central issue of this study is to examine the impact of taʿdhīr on obstructing social reform pathways in contemporary religious societies where Qur'anic values play a pivotal role in policymaking. The primary problem-oriented research question is: According to Qur'anic teachings, what impact does people's taʿdhīr in response to prophets have on the process of social reform and the achievement of educational objectives? The hypothesis posits that taʿdhīr is not only an individual reaction stemming from ignorance or obstinacy but a structural factor with extensive social and educational consequences, leading to the obstruction of reform pathways, the undermining of the legitimacy of divine prophets, and disruption in cultural transformation. Employing a descriptive-analytical method with a focus on content analysis of Qur'anic verses, the findings reveal that taʿdhīr is rooted in factors such as ignorance, tribal prejudice, obstinacy, and material interests, resulting in consequences like deprivation of divine guidance, educational stagnation, social division, and resistance to change. These findings provide a deeper understanding of the failure of reformist movements in the history of religions and propose strategies such as promoting rational thinking, prophetic patience, and social justice to address cultural barriers in contemporary Islamic societies. This study, by linking Qur'anic teachings to social realities, lays the groundwork for future interdisciplinary research.
