Abstract

Social purification (tazkiyah ijtimāʿī) in the Qur’anic worldview is a multidimensional process that begins with the refinement of the individual self and culminates in the reformation of the moral and structural foundations of society. Employing the thematic content analysis method and focusing on the contextual coherence (siyaq) of the verses, this
study identifies and analyzes three main strategies for realizing social purification. The first and most fundamental strategy is “enhancing the integrity of social interactions,” which is grounded in mutual trust, respect for individual rights and boundaries, control of one’s gaze, and avoidance of suspicion and encroachment upon others’ rights. This approach forms the core of human relationship reform and ensures collective peace and moral soundness. From the Qur’anic perspective, it serves as the primary context for both the emergence and prevention of moral deviation within society.
The second strategy is “social guidance and collective moral education,” highlighting the crucial role of divine pedagogical systems—prophets, and Qur’an-based educational institutions—in cultivating socially responsible behaviors and strengthening ethical values. Such organized guidance establishes the foundation for moral growth and the sustainability of purification at the societal level. The third strategy is “promoting the spirit of generosity and charity,”
which functions as an effective means of countering the internal roots of social corruption, such as greed and materialism. It fosters social justice, reduces economic disparities, and strengthens communal solidarity. The findings indicate that social purification in the Qur’an is a multi-layered and coherent process that simultaneously pursues the reform of social relations, educational guidance, and moral reinforcement—ultimately paving the way for a balanced, ethical, and God-centered society.
