Abstract
Tafsir (contemplative interpretation) of the Holy Quran, as a key method of engaging with the Quran, has become a prominent approach in understanding and applying Quranic teachings in contemporary Iran, particularly after the Islamic Revolution. The Quran’s emphasis on tafsir, as seen in verses like “A blessed Book which We have revealed to you, that they may reflect upon its verses” (Sad/29), has led to the emergence of diverse tafsir trends in Iran. These trends,
each with distinct methodologies and perspectives, particularly in the social dimension, have promoted understanding and application of the Quran. This study aims to critically analyze six prominent tafsir trends in contemporary Iran with a social approach, examining their characteristics, strengths, and shortcomings in promoting social understanding and practice of the Quran. Employing a descriptive-analytical method, data were collected through library resources and field surveys, including interviews with key figures. Findings indicate that these trends have achieved successes in areas such as integration with social sciences, public promotion, and structured education. However, significant shortcomings, including neglect of hadith, weak social reasoning, lack of practical solutions, and insufficient emphasis on social practice, pose major obstacles to the development of socially oriented Quranic tafsir. By critiquing these trends and offering practical recommendations, this study seeks to strengthen the social approach to tafsir for deeper societal impact and alignment with socially oriented Quranic contemplation.
